Adelaide, Australia - 18 Feb 2021: A Australia Post postmen is collecting the post from the mail box.

Known as Australia Post Parcels, the locations will have both in-person assistance and 24/7 self-serve options.

They will be staffed from 8am-6pm but will not handle banking or other post office services.

The new format has been developed out of necessity, with one hundred million parcels sent via Australia Post during the last Black Friday peak period.

The service is designed to supplement rather than replace traditional post offices.

“It’s all about recognising the continued growth in parcels through the e-commerce boom,” Josh Bannister from Australia Post said.

“The number one reason for a person to come into a post office these days is to collect a parcel and we think over the next 10 years that the whole market for e-commerce will double and the amount of parcels going through Australia will double.”

The measure is intended to help Australia Post adapt and survive.

The cost of a stamp will also rise again, to $1.70 next month.
