A brave passer-by tried to save a man in his 20s shot dead on a housing estate in Wolverhampton by giving him CPR.

A murder inquiry has been launched after police were called to Eastfield Grove at about 3.20pm yesterday.

The victim, a man in his 20s, was pronounced dead at the scene, West Midlands Police said.

West Midlands Ambulance service arrived afterwards and started advanced trauma care but he had already died.

MP for Wolverhampton South East, Pat McFadden, said he was ‘shocked’ to hear of the shooting in his constituency.

He said in a post on X: ‘Investigations are at an early stage. I would encourage anyone with any information that might be relevant to contact the police.’

Denise Robins, the chairperson of Eastfield Community Centre, told Metro she was forced to shut down the building when she heard sirens.

She said: ‘We heard the sirens at around 3.30pm and it felt like they went on forever.

‘As a precaution, we shut down the building temporarily while we tried to establish what had happened. Luckily we have self-locking doors.

‘When the sirens kept on going though it was really frightening.

‘We are right by Eastfield Primary School and there were a lot of anxious parents waiting out on the road.

‘I left at 4.15pm but struggled to leave because there was so much traffic in the area. The sirens were still going when I left.’

Denise said this is not the first time something like this has happened in the area following a machete attack last year.

She added that 15 years ago an incident like this would have left her feeling petrified but said attacks like this are becoming more common.

‘I just feel sad for the family of the victim and the fact that this has happened to a young man.

‘It is still frightening when something like this happens though. I feel like I constantly have to be on my guard. I become more aware of the space around me.’

A local business owner on Eastfield Grove told Metro that he didn’t see the shooting unfold when he got back yesterday between 6 and 7pm.

‘I got back and there was still a heavy police and emergency service presence out on the road.

‘I haven’t heard much from others in the area about what went on. The police cordon is still in place and it is more quiet this morning.’

Councillor Lovinyer Daley, for the East Park ward, posted on Facebook: ‘This incident happened in Eastfield Grove, close to my own home and where my own boys walk to and from the bus stop for school.

‘Parents were picking up their own children who shouldn’t have had to witness such an awful crime.
