A major defence-linked chemical plant and an oil refinery deep inside Russia are ablaze after a Ukrainian onslaught.

The audacious drone strike hit Metafrax Chemicals in Gubakha, Perm region, and the Novo-Ufimsky oil refinerary in Ufa, around 870 miles from the frontline.

One of Vladimir Putin’s largest refineries – Kirishi, in Leningrad region – was alight after a strike.

The chemical plant produces key explosives for the Russian armed forces while the Kirishi plant has a capacity of some 21 million tones per year.

The strikes unfolded as Nato was forced to scrambled war planes over Romania and Poland after Russian drones were operating on the border of Ukraine.

A ‘threat of an air attack’ warning was issued and the airport in the eastern Polish city of Lubin was shut briefly in response.

It was the second act of alleged Russian aggression in less than a week after Poland triggered Nato’s Article 4 over a drone swarm on Wednesday.

Polish prime minister Donald Tusk said the incident left the world the closest it’s been to conflict since World War II.

Earlier on Saturday, US president Donald Trump took to Truth Social to vow he would impose major sanctions on Putin – but only if Nato stops buying oil from Russia.

He wrote: ‘I am ready to do major Sanctions on Russia when all NATO Nations have agreed, and started, to do the same thing, and when all NATO Nations STOP BUYING OIL FROM RUSSIA.

‘As you know, NATO’S commitment to WIN has been far less than 100%, and the purchase of Russian Oil, by some, has been shocking!

‘It greatly weakens your negotiating position, and bargaining power, over Russia. Anyway, I am ready to “go” when you are. Just say when?’.

New footage released on Saturday showed Putin deploying his dreaded Tu-22M3 strategic nuclear bombers as part of new war games between Russia and Belarus.
