A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a 53-year-old dad died in an explosion on a residential street in Worksop.

David Howard was pulled from the rubble of a collapsed terraced house on John Street in the Nottinghamshire town on Sunday.

An explosion the night before had destroyed the property and damaged surrounding houses, prompting an evacuation of the street.

Mr Howard was pronounced dead at the scene.

Now police have arrested a 43-year-old man on suspicion of murder. He has since been released on bail pending further investigation.

Detective Chief Inspector Ruby Burrow said: ‘Our thoughts remain with David’s loved ones at this extremely difficult time.

‘Whilst we have made an arrest, I want to be really clear that our investigation remains at a very early stage and we are doing everything possible to establish what caused this deeply tragic incident.

‘It remains too early to say whether there is a criminal element to this case and would ask that people avoid speculation.

‘Our inquiries are continuing and I would further ask anyone with information who is yet to come forward to please contact us as soon as possible.’

Responding to a police post announcing the death on Facebook, Ashlie Platt wrote: Gutted, RIP Dave god bless you, all our love bab.

‘You came with so much respect it’s unreal. We’ll never forget you. I’m distraught.’
