London Tower Bridge closed this morning and traffic was gridlocked after a man scaled the railings of the famous structure.

Blackwall Tunnel also shut due to a lorry crash, causing traffic chaos across east London.

The man at Tower Bridge was seen sitting on top of the railings.

He was later helped down by firefighters on a turntable ladder and taken to hospital by ambulance.

The bridge has now reopened.

It comes after a man holding a Palestinian flag climbed Big Ben’s Elizabeth Tower and remained there for more than 16 hours this weekend.

He has since been arrested.

There has been no indication that the Tower Bridge incident is protest-related.

A London Ambulance Service spokesperson said: ‘We were called at 10.36am today (10 March) to reports of an incident on Tower Bridge.

‘We sent resources to the scene, including an ambulance crew, an incident response officer and paramedics from our hazardous area response team (HART).

‘We treated a man at the scene and took him to hospital.’

City of London Police posted on X saying that the man had ‘safely come down from the railings on Tower Bridge’.

Shortly after, Tower Bridge confirmed the bridge had reopened and that ‘visitors with pre-booked tickets will be accommodated all day’.

The Blackwall Tunnel lorry accident happened at around 8.30am, peak rush-hour.

The east bound tunnel remained shut for hours and massive queues were spotted on the A12 from Hackney.

It has now reopened, but there are still ‘residual delays’, according to TfL.

There were no reports of injuries.

A Metropolitan Police spokesperson said earlier today: ‘Police were called at around 8.50am on Monday (March 10) to reports of collision in the southbound Blackwall Tunnel.

‘A lorry collided with part of the tunnel.

‘No reports of any injuries.

‘The southbound tunnel remains closed while the incident is dealt with.

‘Motorists are advised to avoid the area if possible.’
