A major high street bank is closing more than a fifth of its branches across the UK.

Santander currently has 444 branches, but the bank announced this morning that it plans to close 95 of those.

Some 750 staff are at risk of redundancy.

A spokesperson said: ‘Closing a branch is always a very difficult decision and we spend a great deal of time assessing where and when we do this and how to minimise the impact it may have on our customers.’

Following the closures Santander said it will be left with 349 branches, 290 of which would be full-service branches.

In addition, 36 existing branches will operate with reduced hours, 18 will become counter-free branches, and there will be five work cafes.

Santander says the locations affected by bank closures will instead by covered by new community bankers who provide ‘face-to-face money management and general support for customers, visiting local communities weekly’ at local banking hubs.

The bank also says it’s invested ‘tens of millions of pounds’ into refurbishing 99 of its branches, with another 50 set to be improved in the next year.

They say they’ve seen a ‘rapid movement’ of customers banking digitally, with a 63% increase in digital transactions since 2019 and transactions in banks falling by 61% in the same period.

Santander also claims that 93% of the UK population will still be within 10 miles of a branch even after the closures, and adds its customers can also bank at the country’s Post Offices.

The news comes as Santander, a Spanish bank, reportedly considered leaving the UK due to ‘frustrations’ caused by ring-fencing rules, high costs, and interest rate differences.
