A dramatic police standoff has ended with a man driving a Jeep off a jetty and into the water in Perth this afternoon.

The Jeep was first driven onto the Claremont Jetty about 9am (AWST).

A police vehicle was then positioned at the entrance to the jetty, blocking the Jeep from leaving.

A dramatic standoff with police in Perth this afternoon ended with a man driving a Jeep off a jetty into the water.

Dozens of officers, including police negotiators, the Tactical Response Group and the canine squad, were on standby as the police helicopter circled above.

The driver yelled at passersby before repeatedly revving the vehicle, and he got out of the car several times to yell at police.

The man’s mother arrived at the scene and watched on as officers tried to convince him to surrender.

Soon after midday, the man abandoned hope of leaving the jetty via dry land and instead sped off the side and into the water.

Moments later the man emerged and officers pounced.

The man was carried to an ambulance and taken to hospital.
