This is the moment a car ‘exploded’ on a road where Keir Starmer owned a £2m home, triggering an investigation by anti-terror police.

The neighbour and the owner of the gutted vehicle believed the incident was caused by a faulty battery, but given another blaze at the house where the prime minister had lived and now rents out, a full inquiry was launched by counter-terror detectives.

Shocking images show the car engulfed in flames after locals were woken by ‘bangs like an explosion’.

Images of the aftermath show the charred wreckage of the Toyota RAV4.

The vehicle was completely destroyed.

Emergency services were called to the scene of the first fire, which took place at a property in Islington where the Prime Minister previously lived 20 years ago, on Sunday.

They were then called to the second fire at a house in Kentish Town, which is understood to still be owned by Starmer, at 1.35am on Monday morning.

No one was hurt in either of the blazes.

Paul Lasok, 71, who Iives opposite a house in Islington, described how firefighters descended on the four story terraced property.

He told Metro: ‘There were some people from the house out on the road and lots of firefighters. I’ve never seen Keir Starmer here. The fire could have been a lot worse if it spread. Thank goodness no one was hurt.’

David Russell, who lives in Kentish Town, meanwhile described how counter-terror police swept along the road, scouring through bins and gathering any footage from ring doorbells.

He told Metro: ‘It was very dramatic, they went through the bins and everything it was like being in a film.

‘It was like ‘what’s going on here?’. There were so many police that we realised it was the house connected to Keir and we put two and two together.

‘Keir is well-liked around here but is shy. His wife is very friendly.

‘We obviously feel for him he’s got enough on his plate what with running the country.’

A neighbour said: ‘There were bangs and a huge fire. My bike was parked next to the car, its tyre was split by the heat, it was very shocking.’

Another said: ‘’It was  crazy, there were proper big flames you could feel the heat coming off.’

Another neighbour added: ‘It was like an inferno the car was completely destroyed.

‘There were loads of bangs and the cracking sounds from the heat.

‘We had heard there had been other fires on the same type of vehicles and assumed it was a fault on the car.’

A man, 21, has been arrested in connection with the three incidents.
