The husband of a Palestinian doctor whose nine children were killed in an Israeli airstrike nearly a week ago has died as a result of injuries he sustained in the attack, according to the hospital where he was being treated.

Dr Hamdi al-Najjar, the husband of Dr Alaa al-Najjar, “succumbed to his injuries…joining his nine children who were martyred before him,” Nasser Medical Complex said in a statement on Saturday.

Dr al-Najjar left her 10 children at home on May 23 when she went to work in the emergency room at the Nasser Medical Complex in southern Gaza.

Later in the day, the bodies of seven of her children – most badly burned – arrived at the hospital, according to the Ministry of Health in Gaza.

They were killed in an Israeli airstrike on her family’s home, Gaza Civil Defense said.

The bodies of two more of her children – a seven-month-old and a 12-year-old who authorities presume to be dead – remain missing.

Only one of her 10 children, 11-year-old Adam, survived.

Civil defence and the health ministry say the family’s home, in a neighbourhood of Khan Younis in southern Gaza, was targeted by an Israeli airstrike.

In response to an earlier CNN request for comment, the Israeli military said aircraft had “struck a number of suspects who were identified operating from a structure adjacent to IDF troops in the area of Khan Younis.”

It said it was reviewing the claim civilians had been killed.

Meanwhile, Hamas is seeking amendments to the latest US ceasefire proposal for Gaza, a senior official with the group told The Associated Press overnight, but US envoy Steve Witkoff called the Hamas response “totally unacceptable”
