Several Melbourne train lines are facing major delays after a blaze broke out under a railway line near the city’s centre.

It’s understood the fire broke out underneath a railway bridge on Rosslyn Street, West Melbourne, between Southern Cross and North Melbourne stations about 3pm.

Trains have been stopped in both directions after heavy smoke in the area is impacted the train line.

Six train lines, including the Craigieburn line, Frankston line, Williamstown line, Werribee line, Upfield line and Sunbury lines are facing up to 30 minute delays.

Commuters are warned that services may terminate at intermediate stations.

Firefighters have contained the blaze to the underpass, but the fire is not yet under control, according to Fire Rescue Victoria.

It spans an estimated 15 by 20 metres.

Firefighters and Victoria Police remain on scene.
