Two Year 9 pupils from the same school died in separate incidents on the same day.

The students, who attended Horndean Technology College in Horndean, Hampshire, passed away on Monday, July 7, the school shared on its Facebook page.

Hampshire Police have since confirmed one was a 14-year-old girl who died suddenly at an address in Waterlooville, in circumstances that are not being treated as suspicious.

The other was a 14-year-old boy who was struck and killed by a car towing a trailer in Catherington.

A 24-year-old male from Waterlooville was arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving whilst unfit through drugs.

Police were called to each incident within ten minutes of each other, around 9pm.

The school wrote: ‘We are sad to share with you that two of our Year 9 students passed away on Monday 7 July, in unrelated incidents outside of College.

‘We are saddened by this news and know that the community naturally will be too. Both students were valued members of HTC, and we will all miss them greatly.’

It said the school’s thoughts are with the two pupils’ families and friends.

‘We have shared the news with our students,’ it continued. ‘We understand that families will want to support their children through this extremely difficult time and below we have provided some links to useful resources to help in conversations.’

‘In due course, we will be considering how best to remember and celebrate both students’ lives in College, and we will update you on this at an appropriate time.

‘HTC will be happy to receive flowers and gestures of condolence at the main Reception this week.’

In relation to the girl’s death Hampshire Police said: ‘We were called at 9.10pm on 7 July to a report of a sudden death of a 14-year-old girl at an address Waterlooville.

‘This is not being treated as suspicious and a file is being prepared for the coroner.’

In relation to the boy’s death they said: ‘Police were called at 9pm on Monday, July 7 to reports of a collision on Lovedean Lane, Catherington.

‘The collision involved a car towing a trailer and a pedestrian.

‘Sadly, despite best efforts of emergency services, including the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance, the pedestrian, a 14-year-old boy, died at the scene.

‘His family have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.

‘A 24-year-old male from Waterlooville was arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving whilst unfit through drugs and has been released under investigation.’

Police are appealing to anyone who witnessed the collision or has relevant dash cam footage of the crash or the moments leading up to it to come forward.
