A South Australian man is believed to have murdered his wife before taking his own life just weeks after facing domestic violence charges.

To the Bordertown community, Shafeeqa Shah and Mirza Husseini were the perfect couple, raising six children in the small town.

But police say that behind closed doors there was a tragic history of abuse.

The bodies of 47-year-old Husseini and 41-year-old Shah were found on Sunday night.

Relatives had contacted police after they couldn’t get in touch with the couple.

Officers found the two bodies when they went to the home at 11pm and said the pair had died that day.

“Police believe the man took his own life after murdering the woman,” South Australia Police Acting Assistant Commissioner Cath Hilliard said.

Hilliard said police knew the man from a previous domestic violence incident this year.

“However, there were no current court-imposed restrictions in relation to the individuals preventing any contact between them,” she said.

Detectives continue to investigate the deaths but were not looking for anyone else involved.

“It’s tragic,” Hilliard said.

“It’s a tragic circumstance for the family and the community, and all emergency responders who were attending.”
