The M25 has been shut in Essex after a lorry caught on fire just near the Lakeside Shopping Centre, causing traffic jams.

Drivers on the motorway have been warned to expect delays of up to 60 minutes while firefighters put out the flames near the Dartford Crossing.

The carriageway has been closed on the M25 between J30 (Dartford Crossing) and J29 (Romford) going anticlockwise since 12.35pm, according to National Highways.

The southbound carriageway reopened at about 2.12pm, but all four lanes remain closed anticlockwise, with diversions in place.

National Highways said normal conditions aren’t expected until 4pm.

Police say no one has been injured in the lorry fire.

National Highways said: ‘The M25 in Essex is closed both directions between J30 (Dartford) and J29 (Romford) due to a HGV fire that was fully laden with car tyres.

‘Essex Fire & Rescue are working on scene to tackle the blaze. Due to the nature of the fire, it is still anticipated that the road will remain closed throughout the day, with resurfacing likely to be required.

‘Plans are being put in place to relieve traffic caught within the closure.’

The fire brigade said that the lorry is carrying tyres, which are alight and producing thick smoke.

It added on X: ‘Avoid the area if you can and take extra care if you’re near the scene.’

Essex Police said on social media: ‘The M25 is closed in both directions between junctions 29 (A127) and 31 (A13), following a lorry fire.

‘We are supporting firefighters and National Highways at the scene, and the road is expected to remain closed for several hours.

‘Thankfully, no injuries have been reported at the scene.

‘Please check before your travel and plan your journeys accordingly.’

There are long traffic queues back through the Dartford Tunnels and up to Swanley Interchange near the M20 junction.

The detour has been put in place following the hollow square symbol via the A13 and A127 through Orsett.
